Advanced Studio: CCA Expansion
California College of the Arts is situated in the midst of the “Design Triangle”, an industrial design zone surrounded by the mixed uses of industry, fabrication, residential, shipping, retail and transportation. With the growing student population of CCA, they are faced with the challenge of incorporating the newly aquired 2.5 acre back lot, with the growing needs of student housing, larger auditorium spaces, new studios and classrooms, student lounge, cafe and much needed connections to surrounding outdoor spaces and transportation hubs.
The design uses the main circulation paths as the overall organizational logic of the building. The circulation paths act as extensions of classroom space, review space, gallery, lounge and serve as both a visual and haptic connection between the various programs of the school. Furthermore, this logic is extended into the tectonics of the building and becomes a way to read the space both visually and programmatically.
